"The ideal dog is a working animal with incorruptible character combined with body and gait suitable for the arduous work that constitutes its primary purpose.”
-GSD breed standard.
At Vom Insel, we strive for this ideal.
There is nothing extreme about our dogs’ structures except its correctness for working ability. Their trots are smooth and effortless, which not only allows them to go all day, but also is more soothing to livestock than a choppy gait. They also possess the speed and sharp turning ability necessary to head off fleeing livestock.
Our dogs are all extremely talented herding dogs with precise natural balance and an excellent ability to read livestock. Their titles include many different courses and four types of livestock reflecting the wide versatility of their herding skills. They are the top herding GSD in North America.
But our GSD are capable of much more than just being herding dogs. They are
bred for a versatility that will make them good in any dog sport or as great
family pets.
Despite being top-ranked working dogs, our dogs are very easy to live with because they are bred for calmness and biddability. They have on/off switches to their working drives that they set to off when not working. These off switches allow them to be total couch potatoes.
Our puppies are home raised. They are given early neural stimulation ("super dog") and are exposed to complex environments as they grow. Pups are taken for car rides starting at 4-weeks-old. They are well socialized with both people and other dogs.
