Etiology (or What’s in a name): In keeping with the breed's tradition of Western names, this bitch is named after Casey Duane Tibbs (March 5, 1929–January 28, 1990) who was an American cowboy, both on the ranch and in pro rodeo, as well as a Hollywood stuntman, actor and director. Casey won a total of 9 rodeo World Championships: 6 saddle bronc riding, 1 bare bronc riding and 2 all around cowboy and is an inductee of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Whether riding saddle broncs, bare broncs or bulls, Casey knew how to read his stock and to find balance with them. He was known for lightening-fast reactions, as well as his gracefulness. I hope his namesake will show all these traits. Casey Tibbs was active in rodeo organizations and was instrumental in popularizing the sport. He even made the cover of Life Magazine. From 1976 until his death, Casey Tibbs resided in Ramona, California, the community in which Gwangi Aussies is located and in which "Gwangi's Casey Tibbs" was born. Mr. Tibbs was very involved in the Ramona horse community and our rodeo grounds are named after him. Pictured to the right is the Casey Tibbs mural, corner of 10th & Main, in the Ramona village. Casey Tibbs does have Australian Shepherd connections. He produced, directed and acted in "The Young Rounders" whose cast included Jay Sisler's Aussie, Silver. The cast also included Slim Pickens, after whom I named another Tanner daughter. Casey also produced, directed and acted in "Born to Buck," which had an Aussie along on the horse roundup. |
